Human Advances

I hope everyone had a great weekend. It was Gay Pride weekend here in West Hollywood... One of the biggest in the west coast I'm thinking!!! But I didn't go.

Saturday night we went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, I didn't care for it. I thought the story was a bit disjointed and convoluted. The Jack Sparrow character has gotten old for me. I wanted to go because I wanted to see Chow Yun Fat. That was it really. Nothing more.

Sunday I went to Borders. Aside from cooking, I don't have much of a hobby. D'oh! I go there to look, but in the end, I pretty much end up purchasing something. With a coupon in my pocket and I'm ready to go. In my 3 hours there, I looked at their magazines, computer books, cooking books, their audio books, books on art, photography, computer graphics, website design and also books on eastern thoughts. I was pretty much all over the place, and so was my brain.

So much information... Looking at 'em fancy art books, whether it's about photography, illustrations, computer graphics, design on websites... makes me want to design my own website again! One day soon, I'll come up with something on my landing page. Something simple - like me! heh! On another note, last week at work someone sent me this amazing video demo on Microsoft's Seadragon and Photosynth. The result is astounding! When I first saw the demonstration video, I was floored! It's like piercing and probing into a microscopic brain. It's intimidating to say the least. Fantastic yet frightening at the same time. Something that seems so 'futuristic' yet definitely within reach...

But after the thrill, I was like "Then what?" We advance in technology more and more, faster than ever! Are we thinking more with our brain than with our hearts? What about human advances? How are we advancing as an individual? How are we evolving as a race? I was looking through books and magazines on all the latest designs and graphics and programs and technologies and what-not... I felt a bit lost. For a moment there I didn't know where I was 'going'... A bit sad... I guess I was just overwhelmed!

I finally made a purchase on a book that I've been wanting to get for a long while, but never got to. Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. I've checked out many translations before and none of them I felt comfortable with. Upon reading the first few verses from this particular version, I knew I had to get it. And upon reading the first few verses, I think I'm beginning to finally understand a weebit more.

So that was pretty much my weekend.

Ya know, I saw an INCEF sponsored showing just last week actually. In it, they had an indigenous tribe that the government is sorta forcing to mingle with society.

One of the tribesmen was really opposed to it and he was saying how modern life would be such a disaster. That people think it's great, but it really isn't since it just causes more problems. They seemed happy though.

I haven't seen the 2nd or the 3rd Pirates movie, watching Knocked Up instead. Oh yea, it was Pride this weekend. At least now, I can say I've been to one though am kinda okay not having brought a camera. It would have been an extra thing I would have carried and not use.

Yay, for books! I oughta to go to Borders again soon. I bought books from half.com recently, and granted it is wayyyy cheaper, it's a bit weird having previously owned books. I'm tempted to buy the new ones but that'll be silly.

I believe that tribeman knows what he's talking about. His intention is good, but most times, it's just not good enough! :-( Don't bother with Pirates, cuz yu'll regret it! haha! As far as ordering books online, I usually get them from Amazon, or other vendors thru Amazon. Way cheap. If it's not half of the publishing price, I probably won't get it. Especially with 'em computer books! OUCH!

I think I'll be skipping out on pride this year! I prefer borders over Barnes and Noble. Especially their music section. Well, at least you have one hobby. I can't cook! Thanks for dropping by my site and checking in on me from time to time. It's nice to be back online and actually own a computer! The library was getting old really fast!

I used to like B&N, but these days, I do prefer Borders. You don't cook? That's okay, I never used to 'til this year. 40! I'm just experimenting really. I'm glad you got your new 'puter!! I can't wait to hear more from you Steve! xoxo

ARRRGHHH!!!! Heheheh. Sorry for the double post. It forze up, I got impatient and hit submit again. I'll, uh, blame it on that darn technology...yeah, um, that's it...

No worries mate. Just don't spam me with 'em erectile enhancement ads, cuz I don't need it! ahahah!

Perhaps our quest for this amazing technology is a misguided attempt to regain our deep connection with everything around us - a connection that was lost long ago. People (including myself) do not know how to exist in quiet and contemplation anymore.

Many indigenous cultures chose NOT to advance technologically for thousands of years. Why?

I went to a very sacred and powerful place while on vacation, and the crowd of people there was loud and obnoxious. They complained about the weather, dropped litter and yelled into cell phones. They took lots of pictures and left as loudly as they came. I'm sure they'll proudly show the photos back home and tell everyone they had 'been there'.

See above. haha!

Oh D-Man, aside from those people [or is it civilization in general. haha!], I sure hope you two had a wonderful time on your vacation. As for these 'sacred' places... I read that Tibet is coming to be the very same. They need the money, and the tourism there is a bit out of control. Everything is never what it used to. :-(

pod:

i used to spend hours in borders back home, but for some reason it doesn't feel the same here. too sunny outside!
i think we are evolving in the technological way. kids born into it are the start of changes in brain physiology. it is happening!
hope you're swell
;0P

I overheard this young girl wanting an iPhone the other day at the cellular store. The clerk asked her why she wants an iPhone, any particular reason... "I just dooo!" she chimed. I wanted to go over there and pull her hair out! Well I thought about it, is that still wrong? :-)

I've grown weary of PRIDE, but I feel that I must be there. I remember my first couple of PRIDES and don't want the number of people to be less by even one for those folks who've never been!

...but, I get bored.

You know I saw the first PIRATES movie. I know I did. ...but I can't remember it. So, I never bothered with the sequels.

I think going to Pride is good if you have friends coming over from out of town. Otherwise... hrm... I think I'm just a party-pooper! :-) Yeah, this 3rd installment of Pirates I didn't like much. Things just got a bit stale! Either that or I'm just a little picky schitt-head I guess!

I think technology goes too fast at times. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with it.
No Pride this year? They can be a bit bloated and overrated.

You cook? What's your specialties, and when do we get to see cooking vidblog?

Hope you're doing well buddy!!

My specialty? Don't have one! Rice? ahahah, j/k. I actually like making salads... as a meal that's. It's filling and it's really good for you! heh! With lettuce [duh!], sauteed brussel sprouts [yum!], mushrooms, red bell peppers, day-old chicken with herby balsamic dressing... top with fresh grated cheese! Yummy! That's my fave! But no vidblog! heh!

Matt:

I always make sure I find something to buy when I'm loaded with coupons. Call me crazy! But 3 hours that you spent at Borders, I'm sure you'll find something! Borders has been skimping out on coupons--they no longer send out newsletter that bestows store coupon. You have to earn one upon making a purchase. Anyway....

I feel so out of touch with pride sometimes, not that I don't support it. I'm not so keen on anything that involves a crowd these days...I'm claustrophobic!

You still can get the coupon online... Just do a search for 'Borders coupon' and you're bound to find it. As for any event these days, I'm just not into big crowds.. Just like you! I'd rather, well, go to a bookstore! teehee!

heh. we haven't been to a pride in years... we're like old people.

Hate to admit it, but I'm older. haha!

Yeah... i was a bit disappointed with ChowChow's scene in Priates 3. Thought they could have given him more scenes.

I know, and they killed him off, too! AND they also killed off those two kool asian chicks in the movie! Gaaah, bad movie indeedy! ahaha!

I've been to SF Pride maybe twice during the 12 years I've lived here. It's about as exciting and relevant to me as, say, a Shriners Parade in Modesto. Actually, I think I'd rather go to the Shriners Parade since I always got a kick out of those old fat guys with fezes in tiny little cars. Haven't seen those since I was about 8.

Dykes on Bikes, bad disco floats, Carole Migden, drunk twinks & bears, et. al. for the 111,009th time? Bleh.

Actually I'll be in Missouri Pride Weekend and will have more fun stirring up trouble there.

Oh JT, you're too funny! The Shriners Parade. That sounds quite fun actually. We should go and you can tell me all about it! heh! You can be my travel guide! :-)

Urspo:

good luck with the Lao Tzu - I could use a "Lao tzu for dummies'.

I certainly need all the luck I can get! heh! I've started reading a different translation, even I think Mitchell's version is not as incisive, it's a lot more fluid... methinks!

We're going to Portland Pride on the 17th. It's the first time we have not marched in the parade. Borders and like bookstores can be definitely overwhelming for me. I love them, but get disjointed and they start feeling a little commercialized (well, I guess they are, aren't they now??). I like so many topics....that I find myself all over the place, just like you. And, often, leave without purchasing a thing. Which is good, I guess.

I wish I could support my local independent bookstores, but I've yet to find any in my neighborhood. Tho I've yet to check out my local library. hmm...
