Beyond Language

All that is great is beyond language.

When there is so much to say, it is always difficult to say it. Only small things can be said, only trivia can be said, only the mundane can be said. Whenever you feel something overwhelming, it is impossible to say it, because words are too narrow to contain anything essential.

Words are utilitarian. They are good for day-to-day, mundane activities. They start falling short as you move beyond ordinary life. In love they are not useful; in prayer they become utterly inadequate.

All that is great is beyond language, and when you find that nothing can be expressed, then you have arrived. Then life is full of great beauty, great love, great joy, great celebration.

Huh, that was my anonymous comment, but I have no idea how it ended up so! Hmmm...

Jef:

I've been wondering all morning why it seems so much eaiser for human beings to use words to tear each other down, say something negative, or play the pessimist instead of using words to support one another, say something positive, or be an optimist.

Isn't it funny that "use" and "sue" have the same letters?

urspo:

words at the human level are vitally important
and words at the divine are indeed unable to capture what we mean.

there is something about this quote that makes me resist it -- an I'm not sure if I can explain it in words really.

I love this post.

So very odd that I was thinking this very thing yesterday. I was contemplating how blogging can be so hard for me because I have difficulty finding words for all I wish to express. And how writing is almost a painful process for me as I try to squeeze as much meaning as I can in as few words as possible.

Another remarkable quote. Thank you. :)

Great post...thanks for sharing this!
