What Did You Learn?

Please, not again what you studied, how long you spent at it, how many books you wrote, what people thought of you — but: what did you learn?

Text: Idries Shah

As the sun rises and sets, we try to learn as we go along this long and windy road. Everyday. Isn't life but a series of events? A lesson learned here and there... In the end, what we do with it all will dictate how and who we really are. A good man – or not.

What did you learn today?

Living. Room.

I've always loved night photography. A small flash light and the ambient light from the computer monitor... I'd forgotten how much I love taking pictures in the 'night'. Practice practice! I need to do that this coming week.

Have a wonderful weekend everybody. And be safe! xoxo

Road Trip

Bagdad Cafe.

Have you seen the movie Out of Rosenheim, aka Bagdad Cafe? I only have a hand fistful of favorite movies and this is one of them. Right now I can only name four. hmm! Anyway, Alec and I took last week off and we went on a lovely driving trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Hoover Dam... also Flagstaff and *cough cough* Laughlin. Staying in Laughlin was basically out of convenience. We didn't gamble a dime.

GC and Zion were pretty awesome to say the least. No single picture can do them justice. Everything was so majestic... it takes a while to take it all in. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. I had the chance to take some nighttime photos in Zion. Alec was such a trooper... so patience and supportive! One night around 8pm we took the tram up to this particular spot and the driver mentioned that there had been mountain lions spotted some time ago near the same area. With the camera set up and the long exposure time, I only took 3 pictures before we got the hell out of there. It was pitched black but the moonlit skies! A beautiful night. Gorgeous as it may be, there were prolly some wild animals lurking out somewhere near. heh! Here's a picture of  Zion at night, unretouched.

Anyway, back to Bagdad. The first day of our trip on our way out to Arizona, Alec surprised me with a visit to the cafe out in Newberry Springs, California. I must say that it was the most memorable part of the trip since I've always loved the movie! Being there was so surreal and we even ate there, too! :-) The movie is a bit quirky but with a big heart. We watched it again after we came back from our trip and I was reminded just how much I adore the movie and what it means to me. I saw it in the theatre back in 1987 and listening to the song Calling You brings back so many memories from the old days. I still get melancholy. Thanks for taking me there B!

'nuff said. So that's why I was so quiet last week. Below is the link to some photos. The squared format really confines and crops the photos too much, but this is what I have on hand at the moment.

Thanks again for reading and I hope everyone is having a fantastic week!! Be good and be glad! xoxo

Road Trip II & Good Friday

October 2008 Roadtrip.

Ugh! Yesterday I had a tooth pulled out! The filling broke off some time ago and I never bothered to get it fixed. Now the whole damn tooth is out! haha! :-O I guess I'll be getting an implant in the near future. So much friggin' money it is unbelievable! It just occurred to me that with a single tooth implant, I could literally get a D3!!! That is something to cry about! Crappity-crap!

At any rate, I re-did [is that a word?] the picture viewer. Now it's more of a slideshow with captions. I left out the navigation since I just want to torture you all find that a bit cumbersome, but others might think otherwise. There are about some 20+ pictures. Feel free to click on the graphic above!

Well, that's it for now. Have a fantastic weekend everyone. Be happy and productive! xoxo

While Driving

After work while going south on the 405 freeway this afternoon, a 'funny' thing happened. You won't laugh nor chuckle, it's not that kind of funny. *insert happy smiley here*

Near the fork where the 405 splits into the 10 freeway, I was on the far right lane on the 405 and the 10 to my right coming up in about 200 yards. A big rig in a distance was to my left lane and flashing his right turn signal, trying to get to the 10 freeway. No cars were in front of me at the time and I braked enough to let the truck in. But the driver wasn't too quick and I guess I didn't break hard enough either since I don't want to completely stop while other cars were right behind me, and also I thought he might've left his blinkers on?!? I then sped up and so he can pass me.

So when he finally made his turn and was passing me on the 10, he honked and flipped me the bird! *ouch!* The 'funny' thing was that if I had let him pass me, he probably would've waved and gestured an appreciation. Very possibly. At any rate, I just thought it was kinda funny since we can let our emotions run from one extreme to another, simply in a fraction of a second! I find that interesting. See, I told you this isn't funny!

Have a great night/day everybaudy!

Night House.

"Hi! My name is Robert and I'm a lazy-ass photographer." I'm not that lazy but sometimes I feel it. I managed to get a few pictures in this week. For me, I'm not the type of person who carries his camera around town and snappin' pictures. I'm not very much spontaneous. I like to plan things out a bit in my head before I shoot. I need a vision.

Since I'm not out in the middle of nature like 2 weeks ago, these days I can't take pictures of mountains and valleys and rivers and rocks anymore. So since I live in Los Angeles, I might as well take pictures of... Los Angeles. I was never too fond of taking pictures of cityscapes, buildings and the like. Maybe I'll try that. Generally I like taking/looking at photographs that convey a mood... usually something mysterious, brooding or melancholy. That's just me! What do you like to take pictures of??

Well that's it for this Friday. I hope everyone have a fantastic and relaxing weekend. Be safe and enjoy the last weeks of this October!!! xoxo

Ah Pau

Ah Pau.

My grandmother knows best, but these days, she doesn't quite remember much after all these years. She's 97 you see. I'm not sure how I would feel when I do get to be that age. I went back 2 weekends in a row to visit. She's much slower these days and cannot hear so well. Most of the times I just sit next to her, just to be with her. She asked me what day it was, I said loudly in Cantonese, "Twenty-six!" I said it five or six times and she kept repeating "twenty-nine"! She refuses to wear a hearing aid... She doesn't understand technology let alone having something resting inside her ear. Her main activity these days is sweeping the leaves in the shady side yard. She does this 'til she gets very tired and then she would come in and sleep all day. My mother tells her not to over do it because sometimes she would get sick. That afternoon I held her and walked a bit in the back yard so she could get some sun.

My grandmother raised me since birth. At the time, my parents had to work and were always working. She fed me, pampered me, looked after me and guided me every which way. My older sisters were there but often times they were doing something else. Grandmother also tended to my older brother as well, but he was about 6 years older and therefore all the attention was on me. My grandmother was a somewhat feisty, yet strong individual. She had 3 daughters and while my mother was about 6years-old, grandfather passed away. After that, my grandmother had to be strong in order to survive.

She used to take me to the market to get our daily groceries. She would get her basket from top of the fridge and then off we go. She cooked and she cleaned and she tended to almost everything around the house. Before I was born, she even worked and gave the money to my parents. We were quite poor you see, and the money was never enough with 4 children in the house. My grandmother never learned [or had the opportunity] how to read or write, so oftentimes when we go shopping, we would stop by this one guy around the block, whose set up was but a small table and 2 chairs, and had him write letters for her. She recites what she wanted and he writes it all down, for a small fee of course. When we finally moved to the states, I remember getting blank cassette tapes for her to record her 'spoken letters' to send. Always, always to this one friend of hers who was in New York at the time. They lost contact back in the late 80s as I recall. I remember my grandmother telling me her many 'adventures' with her girlfriend. Stories about the war... how one day they were being 'invaded' and the soldiers made her friend kneel on broken glass...

To this day, my grandmother was, and still is, a very strong woman. She was once a young girl with many dreams, she was no different. But these days, seeing her being so fragile breaks my heart. She doesn't even have enough energy to go out anymore, and she gets dizzy riding in the car. She had done so much for me all these years and seems like all I could do now is just sit there... I will never be able to repay her for all the things she did for me!

I love you Ah Pau.

Untitled 0069

Red Shirt.

Goodness, I haven't worn this for over a decade! There are still quite a few 'stamps' on the one sleeve since the bouncers couldn't stamp my wrists rather. I had to go to the bathroom wearing the darn thing! Funny! Over the years I gave n' threw away a lot of things, but I never had the heart to toss this piece out. I knew it would come in handy eventually. Maybe I should wear it tomorrow to the office? But the 'gloves' might get in the way of productivity I reckon.

What should I take pictures of next? Hmm... I do have an idea or two, but I'll need Alec's help to get the boxes down that are sitting on top of the garage. I can't wait! It's kinda cute and I think you'll have a giggle or two! Maaaybe.

'til next time. Have a safe and fun-filled Halloween tomorrrow! *boo*
